Executive Summary

Business Overview

The business consists of two brands operating under a family trust. Both brands deal with shungite however the target markets and perceptions are different.

1. Quantum Energy Healing - an online retail portal for natural and innovative health and wellness solutions. This business is in its early stages. Earth Shield Solutions - an online and p2p retail brand marketing water filtration, purification and energisation products and bulk shungite products that are mostly targeted to the agriculture, horticulture and pisciculture sectors. At the time of writing we are in talks with Wimmers who own Cooroy Mountain Spring water. We are discussing the option to have shungite / fullerene water made and bottled for us at their plant in Cooroy under our own brand.

Market Overview

There are several routes into the various markets for our products and services. Buyers extend from those interested in home-wares and jewellery to protect from EMF and health and wellness solutions marketed online; through to larger commercial buyers for bulk sales of shungite direct to the farming industry promoted via industry groups, agencies and channel partners.

We believe that there is a rapidly expanding market for the use of shungite as a detoxification, therapeutic, and general wellness agent. Marketed in the form of a bottled drink (flat / flavoured / carbonated options?) with a suitable education campaign this a product that may be consumed on a daily basis for its health benefits. Our intention is to develop a shungite beverage that can be broadly retailed. We would possibly include home delivery.

There is a expanding awareness of several factors:

Highlights & Opportunities

Our research shows that the shungite products represent the most exciting business opportunity at several levels. For the market of decorative home-wares and jewellery it appears the competitors servicing the Australian market are few and quite small operations. We have seen that the other outlets are mostly being serviced by our supplier in Russia. In addition we have developed prototypes of home and commercial water filtration systems for bench-top, under bench and whole house systems. Further to this the bottled and bulk shungite water market is fairly open ended.

1. We have had discussions with our Russian supplier and there is an opportunity to become the Australian distributor for the decorative an jewellery products. If we can reduce shipping costs into Australia for the other retailers and offer lower prices than they are currently paying they should come across to us. This would also enable us to further develop the market in Australia as a distributor of shungite products to retail outlets. We can reduce or eliminate shipping costs for decorative items and jewelry by bringing those items in with the bulk shipments in shipping containers. The Russian distributor is keen since it would help reduce their logistical requirements at least for Australia. It should be noted that we also have interest from a USA South Carolina business that has approached us for distribution of shungite objects and jewellery. We are currently discussing options with them.

2. There are currently no large-scale importers of bulk shungite to Australia so the market here is wide open for development in the sales of products for agriculture and horticulture. Initial contact and discussions with some growers locally here on the Sunshine Coast indicates a high level of interest from certain sectors including fish farming and hydroponics. It should be understood that the commercial and industrial use of shungite in Russia is highly developed - it is being used on a large scale applications such as municipal water supply purification, sewerage treatment, large-scale farming, production of special building materials, shungite paints and industrial coatings , storm water treatment, industrial waste treatment, the manufacture of thermal insulation treatments for piping and conduit systems, and industrial water purification systems using shungite to remove turbidity, iron, and dissolved gases. 3. Into the future we would like to take example from the Russians and look at creating shungite based products here in Australia. There is already anecdotal interest in things like domestic and industrial paint finishes and coatings for thermal insulation and EMF protection. We have some ideas which can be expanded upon for the future.

4. Russians have the advantage with many years of study into shungite and a long history of using shungite for commercial and industrial purposes whereas in the west these things are relatively unknown. On the upside all the heavy lifting has been done by the Russians and we are consuming all the information that is available. Our market research indicates that Shungites special properties are of particularly strong interest to the bio-dynamic, organic and chemical-free producers. We consider these to be the most accessible market sector. We are planning and are starting to rollout a search engine optimisation (SEO), social media, and podcasting campaign aimed at create materials for immediate reference to customers. We also hope shortly to create interest at local level with face to face group presentations.

As a final note, in the farming sector, shungite would be considered a consumable as it requires reapplication every three years or so. The importance of after sales service and project monitoring cannot be overrated. Every new user is a potential sales testimonial. We also hope that some end users may be open to allowing visits and tours for marketing purposes.

Our Ask

As mentioned above, the business is essentially in startup stage and very much in need of a financial injection both for the importation of the first  container of materials and some operating costs. As a small independent business the choice is simple - to continue along the current path and wait as we have the funds to expand at some future date or to seek investment from somebody who understands what we're setting out to achieve and who is prepared to be patient.

We are seeking an investment amount of between $40,000 and $60,000 to cover off the cost of the initial amount of bulk shungite material, shipping and landing costs and to help defray some of the proprietors operating costs. We can project gross profit margins on the bulk shungite materials of between 250% and 500% depending on the particular agricultural application and the grade of shungite (powder / gravel).

On the matter of Return on Investment to the investor/s we are open and flexible in this regard and look forward to that discussion and its successful resolution.



Company

Structure & Ownership

The business is a husband and wife team operating under a Family Trust. Helen and Nicholas have worked together for close to 20 years on various enterprises.

History

The couples most recent business, The Good Earth, was unfortunately forced to close down as result of the COVID restrictions on global freight movement during 2020. During the latter part of 2019 the business had been turning over $15,000 to $20,000 per month in CBD (cannabidiol) sales in the USA, into New Zealand and elsewhere around the world. All product was manufactured in an approved and certified laboratory in the USA. The bottled product was labeled with the Good Earth branding and orders were dropped shipped by the manufacturer. With very few overheads The Good Earth business had been built up and traded successfully for over 4 years until its sad demise.

Location

Currently Helen and Nicholas are located with a home office near Noosa on the Queensland Sunshine Coast. As the business grows it may be appropriate to have more space for materials storage, packing, and office facilities. The Sunshine Coast location offers easy access to many potential customers in the farming sector. In particular the area has many certified organic, chemical-free and bio-dynamic growing operations.

Interstate marketing will come on board in the future however the Queensland market will require some time to develop.

Management Team

The management team remains Helen & Nicholas respectively in the roles of marketing and sales. Helen has a pedigree in social media management and a background in teaching social media marketing to business people. She is eminently qualified to undertake this role. In addition, Helen is comfortable with doing live unscripted broadcasts on various subjects including health, wellness, and more recently, shungite and its properties.

Nicholas undertakes the search engine optimisation (SEO) for the businesses websites. His professional background prior to the CBD business was one of the very few Australians (at that time) who was delivering SEO services directly to clients from within Australia. Nicholas bought these professional skills with him into the new CBD business 5 years ago and to date search terms for CBD still bring The Good Earth website up on page one of Qwant, Mojeek, Duck Duck Go and Google - in fact at one time all the original customers for the the business came from SEO results displayed in the USA, NZ and Australia.

Nicholas also undertakes the role of direct sales person. Along with Helen he researches and creates the sales prospect database and then contacts each person either phone or face to face and manages the sales cycle. Nicholas with deal with the logistics for bulk materials.

Market Need

Within the above mentioned farming market there are what can be identified as 'low hanging fruit' - that is end users that have so far been  immediately receptive to the science, production and competitive advantages offered by adopting the use of shungite. In particular this sector is organic, bio-dynamic and chemical-free producers. We have approached a test group of producers that sell produce at farmers markets and out through organic and premium grocers.

A hydroponic tomato grower local to Noosa will be one of possibly 4 or 5 pilots programs along with a strawberry and banana grower near Glenview. We are also in talks with a grower of organic lamb and a grower of both beef and gourmet mushrooms and cut flower grower near Maleny. We have met with the prospects, explained the cost benefits of shungite and have been well received.

Several factors are in play; water consumption, length of cycle, disease exposure, chemical usage or avoidance, product health and longevity, and market quality. The key directive is to identify those producers to whom those are critical components of the production cycle.

Competition

In terms of bulk shungite importers there is literally no competitor in Australia. Any competition is in the form of other products that may offer similar results. There are products and solutions that deliver improvements specifically for water consumption or disease control or chemical exposure or growth or product shelf life/longevity or robustness or vibrancy. For example there are products that offer water retention or soil wetting applications, or offer improved pest or disease control. Each of the products currently available will mainly respond to one issue in particular.

There is no magic bullet for any farming environment however shungite certainly offers multiple solutions within a single product -  this has advantages in terms of application costs, material costs, cross contamination issues, product compatibility, and general convenience.

Barriers to Entry

The main barrier in entering the market is that shungite is not a well known mineral in Australia. Looking at his from another view point however we can see that this can be to our advantage. When shungite is used in horticulture or agriculture, the positive results are tangible, measurable and repeatable. We will be introducing several small pilot installations as mentioned above. These successful pilots can be instrumental in the way forward. The pilot locations will be available for visits by prospects. The demonstrable results will provide proof of concept. Monitoring and recording the progress of the pilots will enable us to create promotional materials for broader distribution.



Strategy

Competitive Edge

As mentioned in the Market Analysis section there are currently no other bulk shungite importers and so at least in this no competitor in Australia. As they become better known, the incredible properties of shungite will elevate it to a place of interest. We intend to build excitement around shungite in Australia and help it become a sought after product. Using the right types of media and using and well presented message we intend to create intrigue and excitement around shungite.

There are few, if any, products that can match shungite for diversity in performance, economy and practicality. The fact that the Russians have undertaken so much study since 1960 and have published a body of data and information gives us a terrific resource to draw upon for our marketing and promotional materials.

Pricing

We are awaiting confirmation for the cost of shipping and landing the 20ft container - we think this may be in the region of US$10,000 including customs clearance. The first container will be loaded with 10 or so pallets each able to carry 1 ton. So essentially we are estimating the shipping cost to be around US$1000 per ton. The amount shipped could be increased and therefore reduce the shipping cost per ton however we have based our calculations on 10 pallets.  A 20 foot container is able to accommodate up to 22 tons which would effectively halve the shipping cost per ton. The below calculations are for 10 tons - 4 pallet tons of shungite powder and 6 pallet tons of crushed shungite.

At the time of writing we have projected gross margins on the bulk shungite materials of 250%.

Shungite powder:

Based on importing 4 pallets of shungite powder including shipping, the shungite powder costs around US$3100 per ton (AU$4185)

AU$4185 X 4 tons = $12,400

Shungite powder example:

@ 250% margin the shungite powder would sell for AU$10462 per ton or AU$10.46 per kg.

A minimum average application of 10gms per meter converts to 100kg per hectare. At AU$10.46 per kg = AU$1,046 per hectare. Based on reapplication on a three year cycle, coverage would cost a customer around AU$349 per year per hectare.

The actual gross profit is per pallet ton for shungite powder is AU$6277

Shungite stones:

The crushed shungite has been offered at US$800 per ton plus shipping at US$600 per ton so comes in at AU$1890 per ton. It is available as 1-3cm stones packed in 25kg using liner bags in cardboard boxes. This grade is suitable for both water treatment and soil conditioning. These size pieces have a good surface area for absorption and also enables ease of handling and easier integration into other substrate mediums such as soils and compost. Coarser grades are available for water treatment if required.

Shungite stones example:

@ 250% margin the crushed shungite would sell for AU$4725 per ton or AU$4.72 per kg

The crushed shungite is generally used for water treatment or in some cases pre-mixed with a medium (substrate, topsoil, fertiliser, compost) before distribution.

The actual gross profit per pallet ton of crushed shungite is AU$2835

Calculations:

Total cost of 20 foot container with 10 tons (6+4) of material = AU$38,080

Total net sales = AU$75,870

Projected gross profit from sales = AU$37,790

Total cost of 20 foot container with 20 tons (12+8) of material = AU$66,160

Total net sales = AU$151,740

Projected gross profit from sales = AU$85,580

The above is an example based upon a single container. If sales and finances can justify and permit we would intend to bring regular shipments into Australia. It is possible that freight and shipping services may be further restricted in future or that costs become prohibitive for a time. Our view is that, providing it can be justified, we should accumulate stock in Australia of shungite for the future.

There are several ways that shungite can be marketed - each dependent on the packaging and and end application.  The above model demonstrates the sales from bulk shungite specifically for farming. The below are projections based on shungite sales for water filtration and purification. This model is more profitable but involves a different set of marketing objectives.

In this model we (currently) sell shungite stones in options as follows:

  • 900gm bag for self use in water purification = $90
  • water filter cartridge filled with shungite = $120
  • bench top shungite water filter / purifier = $224
  • under sink single stage 900gm shungite water filter = $340
  • under sink two - six stage (1 x 900gm) shungite filter system = $440  to $1230

As you can see the above model shows a different financial outcome which suggest that the 4000kgs of shungite stones would have a retail value of $540,000 if marketed and sold in this way.

Sales will be split between the above options however at the time of writing it is difficult to determine the sales mix ratio. The outcome for the shungite powder remains the same grossing around $25,000

In Russia the market for shungite water filtration and purification systems is very well developed for both commercial/industrial and domestic installations. We have noted that the mineral zeolite features in the domestic systems partnered with shungite and we are researching if this has additional applications for us in the Australian market. Currently zeolite it is used primarily in swimming pool filtration and to an extent in drinking water filtration. Zeolite has industrial applications in grey water and sewerage waste treatment.

Marketing & Sales

Leads are generated via internet search, industry associations and groups, personal contacts, local group presentations, business networks, and social media campaigns. The sales cycle usually starts with an initial phone call or drop in meeting.We have produced materials and information pages which reside on the website that are suitable for printing and using as hand-outs.

We have started with research interviews and meetings with local prospects. This includes Noosa Reds Tomatoes where we have installed our first local pilot study and example.

Local halls such as Cooran are for hire for $20 or so per hour and the plan is to promote and gather groups of farmers and growers together for short presentations - information sessions. These will be used to introduce and explain shungite to them with the intention of getting them to 'buy and try' the product.

We can also offer to assess the farm situation in terms of how best to insert shungite into the existing production chain or what might be required to enable this.

Where we have pilot studies in place we will invite growers to meet, visit and inspect these. The intention is to have a pilot study in place for each of the main agriculture / horticulture types. These would include stock (beef, lamb) growing, market garden, hydroponic, fish farming, cut flowers, nurseries, resorts, hotels, hospitality, golf club, parks & gardens.

YouTube will be used extensively to create and publish information specifically aimed at each of the application types. The content will be SEO'd to attract visits from farmers and growers who are looking for improvements in their processes. New prospects will be directed to these videos to see a detailed explanation of how shungite is applied to their own sector. e.g a cut flower grower will be able see exactly how they will benefit using shungite in the  cut flower production cycle.



Operations

Personnel Plan

As mentioned at the time of writing the business currently consists of Helen and Nicholas. We feel that we can handle the Queensland part of of marketing and sales. As we roll out and begin to nail down the best way forward with each of the different sectors it is our intention to seek out and appoint agents in the other states. The current restrictions make interstate travel at best very difficult so communications would be done via Skype / Brave Talk or similar.

If the business grows to the point where we have a yard for the storage and dispatch of materials it is possible in the future that we might need someone in the role of warehouse or logistics manager. Apart from this we do not feel that there will be a big staffing requirement.

The business holds no critical IP apart from its registered business names / brands. Its key assets however are the two principles and their collective and individual abilities.

Supplier

Our supplier for shungite products Shungite с60 is based in Karelia Russia. The nearest seaport is St Petersburg. Shungite c60 is not a miner of shungite however they are well connected with the extraction companies from which they source materials and are small enough for us to deal with on a one to one basis. Shungite c60 have a good reputation and appear to be well trusted by their customers across the world. We have seen reviews and testimonials from many retailers and customers suggesting they are trustworthy. We have had two shipments so far from the company and have no problems to report.



Financial

Start-up Funding

The start-up funding is outlined in the sections Our Ask and Pricing. We are seeking funding for the first shipment of bulk shungite of up to $60,000 to cover the cost of materials, shipping freight costs and some marketing and operating costs. We can see that international shipping may suffer major hold-ups in the next few years so if sales and revenue from the first shipment can justify it we would like to continue bring in regular shipments of shungite to fill demand and to build up a substantial stockpile of product as quickly as possible.

Important Assumptions

We are currently researching the cost benefits of introducing shungite to a production cycle by potentially removing and replacing single function elements with a single element with multiple functions (shungite).

The cost benefit analysis so far indicates that using shungite in the cycle will provide health. yield, longevity, and economic outcomes that will remain attractive to the producer. Whilst it is true that the shungite may have a higher price point than some other elements, the bottom line is improved by its use so therefore can be justified.

Sales Forecast

We have conservatively forecast sales on the basis of selling one container of material over a 3-4 month period.

It is expected that one farm might purchase on average up to 300kg of material. This means in example A. we will seeking out around 10 new sales/customers month and in example B. 20 new sales/customers per month.

Shungite has many applications in agriculture, viticulture, horticulture, pisciculture and general farming that extend equally well to garden plants and house plants, as well as fruit trees, vineyards, and even grain crops. Shungite is as suitable for home gardens as for large scale commercial operations.

In the long run, and certainly in terms of the build up and half-life of residues, the frequent use of chemical fertilizers ends up making the fields toxic, weakening the natural nutritive value of the soil, and resulting in a significant reduction of organic material—the biomass. Fortunately, many farmers are turning toward other methods of farming that are more respectful of the environment and of themselves; either by finding alternative solutions or by moving to organic farming or biodynamic agriculture. Shungite can contribute certain solutions for a healthier agriculture.

Classic shungite - chemical content as percentage range:

In brief, shungite is:

  • A sorbent (a substance that can attach to another) that purifies water and air, getting rid of many organic and non-organic compounds through the act of sorbtion
  • A catalysator that ensures decomposition of occluded organic substances and repair of sorbate (non-sorbent) properties
  • A material that actively interacts with electromagnetic fields of different types and neutralizes their negative impact on humans, animals and plants
  • A carrier of a wide spectrum of micro-elements and biologically active substances that increase intensity of biological processes in human and animal organisms
  • A natural antioxidant that can boost the immune system of humans and animals and  increase resistance in plants

Capabilities

Shungite absorbs and neutralizes harmful chemicals, such as residues from pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, and other defoliants. Many chemical products being applied on fields do not decompose at the end of their period of usefulness and in fact have very long half-lives. A significant amount of these chemical compounds remains in the soil and certain elements that are not leached away by precipitation or absorbed by deeper layers of earth remain and accumulate on the surface year after year. Shungite, because of the fullerenes it contains (and the peculiarities of their molecular composition), attracts these toxic substances and neutralizes most of them.

In Russia

Shungite stimulates what is living and using shungite  in growing soil supports the rebuilding of the substrate of microorganisms that are naturally present in soil so that there is at least a partial return to a balanced, living structure in the fields and in the farming process. Experiments in Russia on large scale plots of farmland showed satisfactory results with the introduction of 10 grams per square meter of land. Having shungite present in water reservoirs used for agriculture (tanks, cisterns) or in the irrigation systems allows large-scale irrigation with shungite water.

In France

A study of the application of shungite on plants has been carried out since 2013 in France for by arborists (orchardists) Jean-Michel Pasternak and Claude Bernard. They mention the following conclusions: “The tests conducted this year show a great tonicity in the plants, more vibrant colors, significant growth, and an accumulated resistance to blight and dryness.”

They have established protocols in arboriculture relative to the quantities and timing of shungite watering or spreading it in pulverized form intended to enrich the substrates. They have also conducted experiments on the way foliage and roots absorb the shungite. Here is their advice:

Usage & application

Watering:
Prepare three days in advance, add 5 litres of water to a bucket with 1 to 1.5 kg of shungite in mineral form on the bottom. Use this water directly on your plants for watering. Or add 7 grams of shungite powder for each litre of water and sprinkle it directly on plants.

For the substrates:
You can mix in the shungite in order to improve the action of the mineral on the plants. Add 1 kg of powdered shungite per cubic meter of substrate to be used as is.

For restructuring the soil and promoting the elimination of toxic substances:
Add 1 kg of powdered or crushed shungite for each cubic meter of substrate. Nine cubic meters per hectare (2.5 acres) of this mixture is enough to restore balance to the soil. This spreading of shungite should be done once every two years.

For enriching a hectare of cultivated land:
Add 1 kg of powdered shungite per cubic meter of substrate to be used as is. This spreading should be done once every three years. Spreading on the soil: Add 30 to 40 grams of semi-crushed shungite per square meter of soil. This spreading is done once every two to four years depending on the state of the soil.

Remarkable results are obtained using shungite on fruit trees whether they’re young plants or mature, fruit-bearing trees.

Shungite also promotes humidity retention, thus reducing evaporation and lessening the need for irrigation. Use with indoor plants

The crushed stone is used both for water drainage and for the fertilization of indoor plants. You only need about 20 grams of crushed shungite for 1 kg of soil. Watering with shungite water is very good for potted plants; their luster and color change, which indicates that the plant is healthier in general and has increased vitality. You will also notice growth and significant development in the stems, leaves, and flowers.

Test it out..

A very simple experiment to demonstrate and prove the eficacy of shungite is to have two vases of cut flowers for comparison - add shungite to one vase of cut flowers: you will see that the flowers in the shungite will last considerably longer and fade much less quickly.
